Chapter 7

She’s Still in There!

“So,” Hansen said, sitting in his office with Carol, “do you still think he’s our best bet?”

Carol sighed. “I dunno. He had an explanation for everything. It’s just too perfect.”

“What are you thinking, then?”

“I thought Carlos was our best bet, but we confirmed and re-confirmed that he got a new car and was in Nevada when he said he was. And this guy’s story was just too clean; he had reasons for everything, and most of them made perfect sense.”

“Did you get a chance to watch Vick’s interview?”

“Yeah. And his made it even worse!”

“Worse?”

“Yes. He’s exactly what everyone said he was–chill, straight-forward, doesn’t hold grudges, always trying to prevent fights... And did you know he’s even scared of fire?”

“Where’d you hear that?”

“Johnny told me. I guess his neighbor caught their apartment building on fire when he was a kid, and it ended up killing his cat. He won’t even go near bonfires or fireworks anymore.”

“But the perp didn’t use any fire,” Hansen pointed out.

“Yeah, but he was in the building pouring gasoline on sparking wires. Realistically, that could’ve set the place on fire at any moment. So whoever did this wasn’t scared of being in a burning building.”

“Well, if the gasoline had already been poured by the time Vick and Johnny were talking, I wonder how each of them must’ve felt thinking back on it? Johnny almost lost his father to a fire, and Vick was traumatized by that fire when he was a kid—and suddenly, they’re both unknowingly shooting the breeze in the middle of a fire hazard.” Hansen shuddered. “What are the chances of that?”

“Yeah, I was thinking about that too. Who would’ve known both of them were scared of fire?” Carol said. “And the other guy had a car back by then... Do you think Vick and Johnny were the original targets?”

“Why would he want to kill his roommate while he’s financially struggling?” Hansen said.

“Oh, I don’t know…” Carol sighed. “Mei’s teaching a class right now, but she said I could come meet with her again when she’s done. Apparently, she convinced that girl she was trying to talk to on Saturday to come back to the studio, so she’s staying late to help her catch up on the routine they’re learning.”

“Yeah, I can relate,” Hansen said. “Here I am, staying late at the office again. And it’s only Monday.” He shook his head.

“Yeah, well, I’m getting sick of this case,” Carol said. “Is there anyone else we need to interview? I can talk to a few others before I head to the studio.”

“Well, I haven’t been able to get a hold of Taya yet. I assume it’s because she probably works the same hours as I do. You could try giving her a call. Then, we should probably verify some parts of the security guards’ stories with Gigi.”

“Last I heard, Gigi was still at the studio too, doing her end-of-the-month paperwork. Maybe I’ll call Taya on the drive and then talk to Gigi while I wait for Maisy and Mei to finish up.
